Polaris Short List Set For Release July 16

The 10 albums on the 2015 Polaris Music Prize Short List will be revealed at The Carlu ‘s Round Room in Toronto a week this Thursday, July 16.

The 40 Long List albums were unveiled earlier last month at The Carleton in Halifax.

For uninitiated, the Polaris is a music award annually given to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, regardless of genre, sales, or record label. The award was established in 2006 with a $20,000 cash prize; the prize was increased to $30,000 for the 2011 award. In May 2015, it was announced the Polaris Music Prize winner will now receive $50,000 — an additional $20,000, thanks to the sponsorship of Slaight Music. Additionally, the second place prizes which go to the nine other acts on the Short List will increase from $2,000 to $3,000. Polaris officials also announced they will be creating

In total 197 titles made the first ballots of the 196 member jury.

This year’s Long List features 18 returning and 22 new nominees, although four of those new Polaris people have been nominated for previous projects: Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld for his solo albums and her work with Arcade Fire respectively, Young Guv’s Ben Cook was previously nominated with Fucked Up, members of Viet Cong were previously nominated as Women, and Siskiyou used to play with Great Lake Swimmers.
