Chris Velan: un-American Gothic

Chris Velan- “un-American Gothic” (NewSong Recordings): This is the first single taken from Chris Velan’s upcoming sixth album, Glow (out on March 4). The Montreal-based singer/songwriter co-produced the album with Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Basia Bulat) and it features top local players. ”un-American Gothic” is an intriguing juxtaposition of a bright Caribbean-tinged melody and rather dark lyrics showing a social conscience. “I’m afraid we’ve gone too far, no-one can save us now,” sings Velan, later adding “the poison’s in the water, though we tell ourselves we’re winning.” His warm and breezy vocal style is the ideal delivery vehicle for the message. The track is already on CBC Radio 2 rotation. Velan has gigs in Victoria (March 22) and Vancouver (March 23), followed by shows in Montreal, Sutton and Toronto.
