STACEY: Build Me Up (Buttercup)

STACEY: “Build Me Up (Buttercup)” (Independent): Originally a hit by British band The Foundations in the ‘60s, this pop classic is radically reinvented by Toronto chanteuse STACEY. She terms her version “a reassignment of context & chords, unmasking decades of secret devastation floating in a synthesized dreamscape.” Her voice has an achingly pure quality, and the sparse treatment lends a melancholy tinge. Kudos to producer Derek Hoffman for his empathetic contributions.

A perfect complement to the moody track is an evocative video shot in super8 film by Laura-Lynn Petrick (Mac Demarco) at Toronto’s luxurious Darling Mansion. The track is attracting love in the blogosphere and is a preview of an upcoming sophomore EP, one we definitely look forward to.
