The Deep Dark Woods: "Drifting On A Summer's Night" (Six Shooter): We haven't heard from this Saskatoon-based roots/Canadiana outfit since 2013's Jubilee, but word is they'll have a new album (their sixth) ready for release this fall. This advance track certainly whets the appetite.
Group leader Ryan Boldt's voice is as rich and resonant as ever, and it is neatly enhanced by the harmony vocals and guitar work of rising young duo Kacy & Clayton. Another notable western musician, Shuyler Jansen, plays bass as well as co-producing with Boldt.
Despite its languid title, "Drifting On A Summer’s Night,” a song described as "about unraveling the true love knot," has a slightly dark undertone. The guitar work is an appealing mixture of fuzz and twang, adding to the spooky atmosphere.
The accompanying video clip features footage from a 1970's motorcycle safety film, Not So Easy. Not sure how that fits the song thematically, but it is easy on the eye.
DDW plays a show at Geomatic Attic in Lethbridge on July 26. A cross-country tour follows in the fall, beginning at The WECC in Winnipeg on Oct. 19 and closing out in Burnstown, ON at The Neat Cafe on Nov. 10. A full itinerary here
Ryan Boldt has a parallel solo career and he recently opened for one of his musical heroes, Richard Thompson.
