Rhye -"Please" (Last Gang): Rhye is an LA-based duo fronted by Canadian singer Milosh. They grabbed plenty of attention with a 2013 debut album, Woman, one that made the Polaris longlist and generated impressive streaming numbers. One track, "Open," accumulated over 41.6 million Spotify streams, while "The Fall" surpassed 22.8 million.
Aside from collaborating with Bonobo on a track last year, Rhye have been silent since then, but now they are releasing a couple of new songs and there's word that a deal with Last Gang Records is now in place, with the release date for a second album tba.
Milosh has a hauntingly androgynous falsetto voice, and on this ballad it is complemented by a sparse beat and subtle piano, embellished at points by strings. Given that languid R&B is all the rage these days, the timing for "Please" is spot on.
In a press release, he notes that “because we play live so much, we’ve built this show that’s somewhat different from Woman. It’s a little more psychedelic. I wanted to bring that to the second record, to incorporate much more soulful and earthy colours. It had to be all live percussion and piano. The human intimacy had to come through the actual instrumentation on this record. ‘Please’ is the stepping stone to where we’re headed.”
Rhye have just started a tour of international festivals, playing the famed Montreux Jazz Festival last night. Serious airmiles will be logged by upcoming shows at fests in Finland, Latvia, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.
