Ought - "These Three Things" (Royal Mountain Records): Look for 2018 to be potentially a breakout year for Montreal post-punk band Ought. They have just announced signing with the go-getting Royal Mountain label in Canada, and deal with the prestigious imprint Merge for the rest of the world. A third album, Room Inside The World, is being prepped for a Feb. 16 release.
Focus cut "These Three Things" has just been released, accompanied by a video. Beautifully shot and visually arresting, the wittily executed clip is co-directed by Jonny Look (Grizzly Bear, Cloud Nothings, Cass McCombs) and Scottie Cameron.
Describing their latest creation in a press release, they explain “Life can be problematic. Everything takes time and energy. We challenged ourselves to create devices of great convenience using three items. When initially testing the convenience machines without the human variable, we discovered luxury and success. However, it was sterile. The beauty only came with the unpredictable moments brought by the human element. Being human is better than looking for an easy way out.”
The track is very well-constructed, boasting insistent percussion underneath vocals that possess a slightly sardonic Anglo feel, a mite reminiscent of The Jazz Butcher or The Mekons (acknowledged influences).
The album was recorded at Rare Book Room in Brooklyn with producer Nicolas Vernhes (Deerhunter, Animal Collective, Silver Jews).
Ought begins an East Coast tour opening for Waxahatchee in Baltimore tonight (Nov. 3) and returns to Canada in March. Full tour dates can be found here
