Ali & Theo: "Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel" (Slaight Music): Ali Slaight and Theo Tams first started recording seasonal songs as a duo in 2009. As Ali recalls at the time: "As soon as we met in the studio, we found we worked easily and sounded pretty good together.”
Last year's holiday single was a fresh and well-received take on “Winter Song,” originally a duet between Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson. This year, the duo goes much further back in time, to "Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel," a much-loved Christian hymn that features a tune that has its origins in 15th-century France.
Their harmonizing and counterpoints sound so relaxed and natural; add unobtrusive strings, and you have a soundscape that's as warm and inviting as a crackling hearth on a blustery winter's night.
Versions of the hymn have been recorded or performed by Enya, Loreena McKennitt, Bad Religion, Whitney Houston and U2. This beautiful new interpretation by Ali and Theo is a worthy addition to a song that has lasted forever it would seem.
