Charlotte Cornfield: Mercury

CHARLOTTE CORNFIELD: “Mercury” (Consonant Records): On the Toronto scene, this folk-inflected singer/songwriter is currently best known for opening and operating the city’s best new live music venue, Burdock. That will change somewhat now with the release tomorrow of a brilliant new album, Future Snowbird. Produced and engineered by Don Kerr (Rheostatics, Ron Sexsmith), it shows Cornfield to be a versatile and convincing vocalist, but it is the poetic and perceptive lyrics that really stand out (Courtney Barnett is an apt reference point). Advance track “Mercury” is one of the most upbeat here, and is neatly augmented by the vocal contributions of Tim Darcy (Ought) that add a neat push and pull effect. Cornfield is a major talent. She is in the middle of a seven-city Ontario (and Montreal) tour that includes a hometown CD release show at Burdock on Friday.
