Monomyth – Aloha

Monomyth – “Aloha” (Mint Records): The new album from this jangle pop combo, Happy Pop Family, comes out November 4th on Mint, but an advance copy is on high rotation on this scribe's sound system.

"Aloha" is the lead-off track on the album, and a sharp new video for it, directed by Jordan "Dr. Cool" Minkoff, has just come out. The tune itself has a striking resemblance to The Jesus and Mary Chain, with rather nihilistic lyrics set to a catchy melody. Other album cuts suggest Teenage Fanclub and Big Star, but the strength of the songwriting and performance lifts Monomyth beyond mimicry. The analog recording process used adds a nice warmth to the sound.

The two main songwriters in the Halifax-based combo, Seamus Dalton and Josh Salter, are both also in Nap Eyes, recently longlisted for the Polaris Prize. Monomyth earlier made a mark with 2014 debut full-length Saturnalia Regalia!.

The group played Halifax Pop Explosion on Friday night, and we sure hope for national touring once the album is out.
