It's Sundown For HMV As Sunrise Expands

Sunrise Records has released a long list of former HMV stores it plans to reopen in the coming months, including a couple of biggies in the GTA.

As HMV’s flagship 333 Yonge Street store empties and prepares to close its doors for good, Sunrise is popping up all over, including openings in high-traffic, high-end and high-rent destination shopping centres such as Sherway Mall and Square One in Mississauga.

An Ontario-centric chain since it opened in 1977, new owner Doug Putman (whose family also runs Everest Toys) has big ambitions to expand the Sunrise brand nationally with as many as 70 stores selling CDs, music and entertainment-branded gifts, merch and apparel--and a lot of vinyl.

HMV declared bankruptcy in January and began liquidating its 102 stores, and Putman was fast off the mark to open discussions about renegotiating rents with landlords affected by the closings.

He seems to have achieved his goal but remains wary of main street stores where rents can be unreasonable, taxes high and traffic for the chain's products less specific than in indoor malls.
