UPDATED @ 9:34 EST: UMC’s ‘Canada 150’ set earns a measured apology

Universal Music promises to remedy an oversight in its Canada 150 songs compilation following a CBC story that went viral criticizing the set for its failure to include any French songs.

The collection spanning the ‘60s to today doesn't ignore Quebec, which is represented by singer-songwriters and bands from the province performing in English, such as Sam Roberts, Men Without Hats, Gino Vannelli, Corey Hart, Leonard Cohen, and Celine Dion.

The celebratory sesquicentennial set, released June 30, was released as a single "Icon" CD and as an expanded Now & Next 2CD set.

A six-CD set was also advertised but has not been released.

The deluxe edition was to include over 100 songs packaged in a 60 page, (10 x 14) hardcover book featuring a double cover with Marc Jordan & Murray McLauchlan commissioned paintings featured on each.

Responding to its failure to include a bilingual mix in the package that was released, the company posted the following statement Thursday on its Facebook page.

“Universal Music Canada acknowledges our errors of omission in the creation of the Canada 150 set. While no compilation should claim to be comprehensive, the absence of French-language repertoire is an incomprehensible oversight, which is not reflective of our values, and we will take action to remedy the offence. Our company has true admiration for francophone arts & culture and we remain committed to its continued support and development.”

As of this morning, 98 people have commented on the apology, in French and English.
