Cadence Weapon - "Large" (eOne): Serving as Poet Laureate of Edmonton from 2009 to 2010 marked Rollie Pemberton (aka Cadence Weapon) as a masterful hip-hop lyricist. He has had two of his albums shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize but has never entirely secured the broader commercial success many had predicted.
After an extended hiatus and relocation to Toronto, he returned to the recording ring earlier this year with a collaboration with Kaytranada on "My Crew (Woooo)." On Jan. 19, he will release an eponymous new album on eOne.
"Large" is the third track to be shared from the album. Produced by Chef Byer and Tr-wubblenaught, it is a single that, in a press release, the rapper calls "an anthem of independence. It's all about brewing out of that box and being whoever I want to be, creating my own wave and doing it big, in my own way." Cadence Weapon has continued to follow his own path in an era and genre full of copycats.
Over a sparse yet effective electro backing track, CW declares "I don't see shit in the same way" and "I'm just raising the bar," while angrily stating "all of you rappers are frauds."
The upcoming album features appearances from Deradoorian, Blue Hawaii, Brendan Phillip and Casey MQ and tracks from an eclectic range of producers, including Kaytranada, Francis Got Heat, Jacques Greene, and Harrison.
Cadence Weapon plays a show with Del the Funky Homosapien at Cabaret Du Casino De Montreal on Nov. 17.
