Frazey Ford - "Can You Get To That" (Arts & Crafts): This Vancouver-based singer/songwriter first turned ears as part of the internationally acclaimed folk trio The Be Good Tanyas. She has since forged a solo career with a unique and compelling sound that fuses soul, folk and Americana elements, as showcased on 2010’s Obadiah and 2014’s Indian Ocean.
Her luminous talent caught the attention of Arts & Crafts, who signed Ford last year. After a cover of D’Angelo's “When We Get By”, released last year, she returns with another cover of an R&B hit, Funkadelic's “Can You Get To That.”
In a label press release, Ford explains that "I first heard this Funkadelic track years ago while planting trees on a mountainside in intense heat. That moment of hard work, sweat and deep funk has always stayed with me."
Her take on the tune is inventive, with her earthy and husky voice embedded in a clean production that features lilting guitar, swirling organ, and judiciously placed backing vocals and horns. This isn't hit you in the gut-deep funk, but instead is a sweet and soulful treat.
In welcome news, Ford is returning to Afterlife Studios to record her third solo outing, to be co-produced by Ford and John Raham (We Are The City, Soujouners, Destroyer), and featuring high-calibre guests. We await it eagerly.
Ford is currently playing shows in California. Canadian summer dates include Vancouver's Khatsahlano Festival (July 7), Colwood, BC's Rock the Shores (July 15), and Lethbridge's Wide Skies fest (Aug. 1),
