The nominees for the 49th Annual Juno Awards were announced today (Jan. 28) by The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) at a press conference attended by media and industry notables at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre (CBC), in downtown Toronto.
Heading the list is Alessia Cara with six nominations and Tory Lanez with five, followed by Alexandra Stréliski, Bryan Adams, bülow, Loud Luxury, NAV, and Shawn Mendes, with three apiece.
The host province of Saskatchewan is well represented with nominees including Hunter Brothers, Foxwarren, The Dead South, and Terri Fidelak and Carey Shaw.
The media event also saw the announcement of this year’s Juno Awards host, Alessia Cara. ”You’re stuck with me,” she told the crowd modestly, adding that “this is very cool.”
Also named were the first four confirmed Juno Award performers, Lennon Stella, Daniel Caesar, The Glorious Sons and Tory Lanez. More artists will be added shortly.
Juno Week 2020, hosted in Saskatoon, SK, will culminate with the 2020 Juno Awards - broadcast live from the SaskTel Centre on Sunday, March 15 on CBC, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music, the CBC Listen app and globally at cbcmusic.ca/junos.
Tickets are available online at www.ticketmaster.ca, by phone at 1-800-970-SEAT (7328) and in-person at the SaskTel Centre Box Office. $1 from every ticket sold will be donated to MusiCounts, Canada’s music education charity associated with CARAS and the Juno Awards.
At the conference, CARAS/Musicounts chair Mark Cohon made a passionate plea for more support of MusiCounts, given “the major cuts music education is going through.”
Also addressing the audience were CARAS head Allan Reid and CBC Exec VP Barbara Williams. Reid welcomed the host committee watching from Saskatoon, promising “we’ll be Saskatooning with you soon!”
