Jessie Reyez: Love In The Dark

By Kerry Doole

Jessie Reyez - Love In The Dark (FMLY / Island Records / UMC): The fast-rising star (and recent Grammy nominee) has announced that her full-length debut album, Before Love Came To Kill Us, arrives on March 27.

It is remarkable how far she has come with just a couple of EPs, and it is fair to say that this is one of the most anticipated Canadian albums of the year. Last fall's track and video, Far Away, packed a punch, and this new advance single will surely further fuel interest in the record.

The song begins as a sparse piano ballad built around Reyez’s distinctive breathy delivery, then surges with swelling strings and a massed vocal choir. The epic sound punctuates powerful lyrics – "And when the stars are falling down, There's love in the dark." We hear a hit here.

Reyez has yet to match the huge success of her 2016 single Figures (triple-platinum in Canada, gold in the US), but that is surely just a matter of time.
