The Weeknd Chokes Up Receiving Quincy Jones' Humanitarian Award
The Weeknd was presented with the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at the inaugural Black Music Action Coalition Awards in Hollywood on Friday, Sept. 24.
The honour recognizes the singer’s donations totalling more than $2M to social justice orgs, the US$500K to MusiCares Covid-19 Relief Fund in the US and the C$500K contributed to a fund for frontline workers at the Scarborough Health Network in Canada.
The Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award was also given to American singer H.E.R. ((born Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson). Her stage name is an acronym for "Having Everything Revealed".
In the following acceptance speech, The Weeknd explains how he first met Q, how he taught him “that giving back is always more important than receiving,” and in an outburst of emotion he states emphatically that “This is the best award I’ve ever gotten in my life.”
