Why the past 10 years of American life have been uniquely stupid

Social scientists have identified at least three major forces that collectively bind together successful democracies: social capital (extensive social networks with high levels of trust), strong institutions, and shared stories. Social media has weakened all three. To see how, we must understand how social media changed over time—and especially in the several years following 2009.

In their early incarnations, platforms such as Myspace and Facebook were relatively harmless. – Jonathan Haidt, The Atlantic

You never really know who your enemies are

Did a really good talk this week in Stockholm on the dangers of tracking and the unsustainability of the current model of advertising. The audience of advertising, marketing, and media people hated it. Like the man said, "It's hard to get people to believe something when their livelihoods depend on believing the opposite."

Some of the points I made:
   - By the time the average child is 13-years-old, the AdTech industry has 72,000,000 data points on him/her.
   - According to the World Federation of Advertisers, by 2025 ad fraud could be the world's second-largest source of criminal income.
   - The whole tracking "consent pop-up" racket has been ruled illegal by the enforcement arm of GDPR.
   - About 2/3 of people who join extremist groups on Facebook do so as a result of a Facebook recommendation.
   - The ad industry is now the least trusted industry in the world. – Bob Hoffman, The Ad Contrarian

Human Rights: Time for America to look within?

The US lectures the world on human rights. But it has failed to check the rise in hate crimes at home. It has also failed to control guns. In New York, a man opened fire in a subway, on the same day 2 Sikhs were attacked with a rod. Palki Sharma raises important questions. – WIO News

Vivien Lewit, Global Head of Artists at YouTube, took some time to talk about the Google-owned video streaming giant's partnership work with Canada's music industry and how they're moving into the future.

Like many major labels and streaming companies, YouTube has a major presence in Canada. For artists and content creators, it provides access to an audience that stretches beyond our borders.

"When you think about YouTube, the beauty for all artists and Canadian artists is the global reach," says Vivien Lewit, Global Head of Artists at YouTube, in an interview with Billboard Canada, after a recent trip to Halifax for the Juno Awards. "There are over two billion really logged in viewers that watch music videos each month on YouTube. The exposure is enormous."
