2022 Prism Prize Eligible Video: Charlie Houston - Things

The 2022 Prism Prize for Best Canadian Music Video was recently awarded to Mustafa, for his clip for his own track, Ali. We will continue to profile noteworthy Canadian videos that were eligible for the 2022 prize, including this one from a Toronto R&B/pop singer/songwriter.

Charlie Houston - Things

Charlie Houston is a pop and R&B singer based in Toronto, Ontario. Charlie has stated that she strives for her songs to be authentic and reflect not only her struggles but also what other young people go through. This is seen through her various songs which touch on heartbreak, mental health issues, discovering one’s sexual identity, and first kisses. Her single Things was released in 2021 and touches on the pressures to conform to a partner’s ideals in a relationship. Her latest release, out in July 2022,  is entitled Dinosaurs In The Garden.

Her video for Things follows Houston as she skateboards around the city at night. It is darkly lit with light from billboards, streetlamps, and bridges lighting her way. The shots vary from the camera zooming through the city showing a blur of lights, the distorted close-up shots of Charlie’s face, and shots of dancers whose colourful tops add a pop of colour - to the shots of Charlie on the skateboard. The video very much fits the vibe of the song, the mellow beats being a great background to this mini city tour.

Listen to Charlie’s music on the audio streaming service of your choice.
