MusiCounts has announced that this year $725,000 in musical instruments and equipment will be distributed to 80 schools across Canada through the MusiCounts Band Aid Program. To celebrate, a special MusiCounts StarBand comprising Vancouver area music students will perform during Juno Week in Vancouver on March 24, with Juno winners Dear Rouge as a special guest.
The MusiCounts StarBand is a multi-school wind orchestra featuring over 65 students from Vancouver area schools, who previously received instruments through the Band Aid Program. Led by MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award recipient Mark Reid, participating schools include John Oliver Secondary School, Killarney Secondary School, Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School, Tamanawis Secondary School, Maillard Middle School, Terry Fox Secondary School and Vancouver Technical Secondary School.
The free MusiCounts StarBand performance, hosted by Grant Lawrence, will take place March 24 during Let's Hear It! LIVE at Vancouver Art Gallery Plaza (750 Hornby St., Vancouver) from 3-3.45pm.
Each year, the MusiCounts Band Aid Program provides instruments in $5K or $10K increments to schools whose music programs are in need of support to ensure their sustained growth. Of the 80 schools announced this year, Conrad Fitzgerald Academy in English Harbour West, NL, will be the recipient of an enhanced, $20K True North: The Canadian Songbook Band Aid Grant. Before Juno Week, MusiCounts surprised a Vancouver school with $10K in new instruments for their program. Watch the surprise unfold here.
