Miesha And The Spanks: It's My Year (Mint Records):  Calgary-based indie rock duo Miesha & The Spanks (Miesha Louie, Sean Hamilton) recently announced a signing to noted Vancouver label Mint Records, and a new full-length album, Unconditional Love In Hi-Fi, is coming out on April 14.

It's My Year is the new single and video from that record, and it's a winner. Louie cranks out fuzzed guitar riffs, and her full-blooded vocals soar atop Hamilton's kick-in-the-head drum beats, and her bold declaration of intent rings true.

The track was recorded at the National Music Centre in Calgary, with producers Daniel Farrant (The Buzzcocks) and Paul Rawson at the helm. It is accompanied by a video co-directed by Sebastian Buzzalino and Miesha Louie. In a label press release, Buzzalino explains that “For this video, we set out to kick the year off in glittering style. We had to win over some ‘bored fans’ as a metaphor for leaving 2022 behind and heading into 2023 with full hearts and open optimism. As Miesha and Sean win over a small group of friends, we launch into resolutions and parties, manifesting a new year that is entirely ours.”

Mint Records’ Adrienne Labelle describes the signing of the duo this way: "We first met Miesha & The Spanks when they were playing at Liverpool Sound City in April 2022. Though we'd been seeing the band name on multiple festival lineups and in the press, this was our first time seeing their live show, and it blew us away. We love their high-energy live set and the creative vision for their music. We're excited to be teaming up to release their new album nearly one year later to the day. Miesha is a powerhouse, and it's an honour to work alongside her. We couldn't agree more with the first single’s title…it's her year!”

Miesha Louie is a mixed-Secwépemc artist living in Treaty 7 Territory, and The Spanks are the many drummers who’ve stood beside her on stage. Sean Hamilton is her latest and longest partner. Stylistic reference points would include The Runaways, Stooges, and riot grrrl/grunge pioneers L7.

A first round of tour dates begins at the Blizzard Festival in Rossland, BC, and in Fernie, Jan. 27-28, followed by two Feb. showcases in Sweden and performances at the New Colossus Festival, New York, in March. Details on a Western Canada tour in April and Eastern Canada run in May to support the album will be announced in the coming weeks. More info here.

This scribe has seen the band in concert and can attest to its power in performance.
